With the launch of this satellite, Bangladesh has become the 57th country in the world to have an artificial satellite.

The satellite will enhance the country's ability to forecast and observe natural disasters. The satellite will be available to SAARC countries as well as Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and parts of Kazakhstan.

The satellite was originally scheduled to launch on December 16, 2016. But its launch was postponed due to Hurricane Irma.  In November 2015, BTRC signed a ৮ 247 million contract with Thales Elenia Space Facilities Company of France to build the country's first A satellite. The satellite was housed at the Cannes Warehouse in France after the company completed construction of the satellite a few months ago. The satellite was later transferred to Florida on March 29. To launch the Bangabandhu-1 satellite, Bangladesh purchased an orbital slot at 119.1 degrees east longitude in January 2015 from the Russian satellite company Intersputnik for কোটি 28 million.
